A kitchen can look completely different for a fraction of a full remodel, and cabinets are usually where that difference comes from. Before you price out replacements, it's worth knowing that repainting the cabinets you already have often gets you 90% of the visual change for a small share of the cost.
Painting makes sense when the cabinet boxes are structurally sound. If the frames are solid wood or good-quality MDF and the layout works for you, there is no reason to tear them out — a proper finish will look factory-fresh and last for years. It's the finish that dates a kitchen, far more than the boxes.
The finish is where the skill lives. Cabinets take a beating from hands, grease and cleaning, so cutting corners shows fast. The right process is thorough: clean and degrease every surface, sand for adhesion, prime, and then spray or hand-finish smooth coats of a durable cabinet-grade paint. Done right, it resists chips and wipes clean.
Replacing is the better call when the boxes are falling apart, water-damaged, or you want a different footprint entirely. If the layout is the problem, a new finish won't fix it. But if you like your kitchen and just want it to look new again, painting is almost always the smarter money.
