Stain or Paint? What Weathered Decks and Fences Actually Need

Apr 30, 2026 Legacy Paintworks

Wood that lives outside — decks, fences, porches, handrails — weathers on a schedule. Sun breaks down the surface, humidity and rain swell and dry it, and in a few seasons the wood goes grey and thirsty. That grey layer isn't rot; most of the time the wood underneath is sound and a proper stain job brings it back.

Stain beats paint on exterior wood for a simple reason: it soaks in instead of sitting on top. Paint forms a film, and on a deck board or fence picket that film cracks as the wood moves, lets water in, and peels in sheets. Stain penetrates, so it wears away gradually instead of failing all at once — and recoating later is cleaning and staining, not scraping.

The prep still decides the result. Weathered wood needs a thorough clean to lift the grey fibers and mildew, sanding where the grain has furred up, and time to dry fully before any product goes on. Stain applied over dirty or damp wood sits on the surface and fails early, exactly like paint over a dirty wall.

Picking the stain is a trade-off between look and lifespan. Transparent and semi-transparent stains show the most grain but need recoating sooner; solid stains hide weathering and last longer but cover the wood's character. On hard-worn surfaces like deck floors, a semi-solid or solid product is usually the honest recommendation.
