The most common painting regret isn't the workmanship — it's the color. A shade that looked perfect on a tiny chip in the store turns out too cold, too dark or too busy across a whole wall. A little process up front saves a whole second coat.
Test big, and test in place. Paint a large swatch — at least a couple of feet square — directly on the wall, not on paper, and look at it in that room. Color reads differently against your floors, your trim and your furniture than it does anywhere else.
Then watch it through the day. Light changes a color completely: north-facing rooms read cooler, west-facing rooms warm up hard in the afternoon, and warm bulbs push everything yellow at night. Live with the swatch for a day or two before you commit.
When in doubt, anchor the house with quiet, flexible neutrals on the big surfaces and save bold color for smaller moments — an accent wall, a door, a single room you're happy to repaint sooner. Neutrals also help a home feel cohesive room to room and age far more gracefully than a trend color.
